Hold All Abusers in the NFL Accountable
One of the mantras that I often hear in the movement to end domestic violence is that we need to keep victims safe and hold abusers accountable. And, finally, the NFL has set a policy to hold abusers accountable. But accountability is only effective when it is consistent. I’m glad that the Baltimore Ravens terminated Ray Rice’s contract and the NFL has put him on indefinite suspension. That decision came after a weaker penalty once video footage of the violence was released.
Unfortunately, the justice system has not had as strong a response to Rice’s extremely abusive behavior. While it is unclear why charges have been downgraded, what is clear is that the level of violence that Rice that has been recorded on camera is a crime and Rice should be held accountable regardless of a victim’s ability or willingness to testify.
On the other hand, the NFL and some of its other teams have yet to do the right thing in two other cases of domestic violence. So, what exactly is holding them back? Casey Gwinn of the National Family Justice Center Alliance has some thoughts.
